Where to Buy Corset Supplies in Europe: 3 Etsy Shops Review

Where to buy materials for corset making if you live in Europe, like me: I review three Etsy shops, starting with UNudeCrafts, and the corset mesh, boning, underwire channeling and bra foam I bought from them.

Why Etsy for corset supplies

Corset supplies are hard to find in ordinary fabric shops in Europe, and on Etsy I had a great experience: all three sellers were very nice and helpful. The one thing to watch is the mesh.

Tips for buying corset supplies (plastic and metal boning, corset mesh, bra underwires)

• Corset mesh is tricky to buy online: every shop listed it as non-stretch, but all the mesh I received stretched a little. For a corset it should be 100% non-stretch. If your mesh stretches in one direction only, turn it: I cut my pieces so the direction that doesn't stretch runs across the grain line (the weft), around the body.
• "Nude" isn't one colour: each shop's nude was a different shade, from pale pinkish to yellowish. A screen never shows the true shade, so it's a lottery: buy from several shops and compare.
• Comfort: from my experience, most mesh fabrics are scratchy and not very pleasant to wear. If you plan to wear your corset often, choose cotton instead.
• Check the boning fits the channeling. Plastic boning is about 1 mm thick, and that counts too: my 6 mm plastic boning didn't fit a 1 cm channeling, so with 1 cm channeling use 5 mm plastic boning. With metal boning, remember the tips are wider than the bones themselves.
• Plastic boning doesn't bend sideways; metal boning is more flexible and softer, but harder to cut. Buy it by the metre, with enough tips and a tool that cuts metal. Cut the bones one side at a time; don't try to cut through the whole bone in one go.
• For bra underwires, measure your sewing pattern (I measured one from an old bra), and if you're not sure, buy several sizes.
