Vikisews Oona Dress Part 1: Tiered Linen Dress Pattern Changes
Part one of my Vikisews Oona dress tutorial: all the changes I made to the Vikisews Oona pattern for a flowy summer linen dress with a tiered skirt. Part two shows the sewing.
Why change the Vikisews Oona pattern
A tiered linen dress is light, flowy and perfect for summer, and the Vikisews Oona pattern is a good base for it. I made a muslin first and changed the pattern before cutting the linen, to make sure the fit is right.
My changes to the Vikisews Oona pattern
- A better fit: on the muslin the first back tier lifted a little and the front sat lower, so I added 3 cm at the back and removed 3 cm at the front.
- A fuller front skirt: I split the front into equal sections and spread them about 1 cm apart, for more gathers.
- Tier sizes: each tier's width is the tier above it multiplied by 1.5. The tiers are 15 cm high and the bottom one 20 cm, with a 3 cm hem. I made the second and third tiers a little smaller, because their gathers looked denser.
- Longer sleeves (7–8 cm more), with an elastic casing made from 3 cm bias tape, and 2 cm trimmed from the sleeve sides.
- A ruffled neckline: I removed 1.2 cm from the neckline and added a 2.5 × 90 cm ruffle, finished with bias tape.
What I used for the tiered linen dress
- Vikisews Oona pattern
- Linen fabric 2.67 m, 150 cm wide
- Muslin fabric for a test version first
- Bias tape 3 cm wide, for the sleeve casings and the neckline. I make my own from thin cotton (see part 2)
